Many Americans admit that the government cell phone program (also known as Lifeline or Obamaphone) is one of the most successful government programs. Just in case you didn’t know, it provides free cell phone service. An estimated 12 – 15 million Americans already have free cell phone service. Most people use the phone to help them find work, keep in contact with their families, and to make calls or texts for various communications.
There are over 50 providers who specialize in providing free phones and service and who are licensed to do so under the government’s Lifeline Assistance program. Currently, 49 states, plus Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico are participating. Every state have several providers to choose from.
Step One: The first thing to do is find out who provides free cell phone service in your state, and that state’s specific eligibility requirements. To find out, use the button on the right of this page to view plans nearest you. After you complete your details the next page will list the mobile phone companies who will be able to provide you with your cell phone and service. And, it will list the eligibility requirements for your state.
Once enrolled, you can opt to have your phone mailed to you or go pick one up from your local provider. We hear that delivery times vary quite a bit between the different Lifeline cell phone companies, from a week to several weeks. So please be patient. Note that USAFreeCellPhone.com is not associated with any of these companies, and we cannot assist in the application or shipment process.
Step Two: Review every provider listed on your state page. While the federal Lifeline program provides guidelines the companies must follow, the plans and phone choices often vary between providers.
Once you’ve narrowed down your choices of providers, go to each company’s website and take a look at the phones and programs they have to offer. Or give them a call and talk to them. Free cell phone service plans can vary by talk time, data amounts, etc. You’ll be with this company for a minimum of one year, so choose the one that best meets your needs.
Step Three: Once you’ve determined which company is right for you, enroll either by phone or on the company’s website. It’s probably best to enroll online if you can, so you won’t have to spend time waiting in line or on the phone. Online you can upload any documentation they might require. By the way, if you qualify because you already participate in an existing government program then be sure to select that method. It’s the fastest and easiest way to qualify. If you aren’t currently participating in any of the listed government programs then choose “Qualify By Income”. Just know, income qualification requires more documentation to gather up and send.
